Aventis Pasteur – Industrial Operations

Technical breadth, affordability, and easy implementation make JMP® software the standard for Aventis Pasteur

Aventis Pasteur is a leader in world health. The company concentrates its research exclusively on vaccines, including for cancer, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), AIDS, high-risk endemic viral or communicable diseases dangerous to travelers, polio, and more. The resurgence of certain diseases such as diphtheria, measles, and tuberculosis clearly demonstrates the need for systemic vaccination programs on a global basis. Each year, more than 1.4 billion doses of vaccines are used to immunize 500 million people around the world. As a leader in protecting and improving human health around the world, Aventis Pasteur is committed to providing the best immunological solutions for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and cancers.

Challenges to Drug Development and Production

Today, the pharmaceutical industry faces two major challenges—quality and economic efficiency. Quality relates to the imperative for product efficacy, high purity, a high level of safety, reliability, and the assurance that any product offered is fully in compliance with the regulations designed by health authorities to protect consumers. Economic efficiency is also a must in a competitive environment where price pressures linked to the health cost of social systems can make or break successful product introduction and adoption.

To successfully combat these challenges Aventis Pasteur developed Excellence programs that drive continuous process improvement globally. In addition to implementing these Excellence programs, the Aventis Pasteur Industrial Operations (IO) Six Sigma committee wanted to standardize on one software package for Six Sigma training programs, as well as quality initiatives responsible for production and R&D for new drugs.

Aventis Pasteur chose JMP® software as the statistical data analysis tool for their Lean Six Sigma project. All parts of the company, including transactional base processes, are impacted by the Lean Six Sigma initiative. JMP is also the tool of choice for day-to-day process management using automated boards for manufacturing floor staff. This automation capability provides a user friendly, high valued service for the manufacturing units that administer daily procedures.

Why They Chose JMP®

“The major criteria for choosing a technology to meet the needs of the Industrial Operations Division at Aventis Pasteur were technical coverage, economic feasibility, and ease of implementation,” said Dr. Rene Labatut, Executive Director of Process Technology Improvement, Industrial Operations Division. “The best fit for us, considering our overall goals, was JMP.”

“JMP allows the staff to closely control process implementation, diagnose potential deviations and process robustness improvement opportunities,” said Labatut. “JMP’s visualization capability and built-in drivers for progressive data exploration help define interrelated process parameters and outputs. This capability tracks the evolution of relationships and reinforces process management.”

Aventis believes JMP is the ideal tool to help them isolate processes whose improvements will yield significant financial savings. To that end, the use of JMP by some trouble-shooting teams has allowed them to succeed faster with solid, rational root cause documentation.

A Total Solution

To maximize JMP's potential to Aventis Pasteur, JMP and SAS France team to provide a total solution for the organization. The joint efforts address U.S. Food and Drug Administration 21 CFR Part 11 requirements, as well as provide local language technical support. SAS France also provides technical expertise to address specifics of the Lean Six Sigma program, such as Gage R&R. JMP Scripting Language (JSL) is a vital feature used to automate certain functions for improved process management.

"JMP allows the staff to closely control process implementation, diagnose potential deviations and process robustness improvement opportunities. JMP’s visualization capability and built-in drivers for progressive data exploration help define interrelated process parameters and outputs. This capability tracks the evolution of relationships and reinforces process management."
