General FAQs

I am trying to import a delimited text file with column headings into JMP but JMP is not creating my columns correctly. What should I check?

To import a delimited text file, do the following:

  1. Select Open from the File menu.
  2. For Windows, select Text Import Preview for the Files of type field.

For JMP 6 and higher on the Mac,
    1. Select All Text Documents for the Show field.
    2. Select a text document.
    3. Select Data (using Preview) for the Open As field.
For JMP 5 on the Mac,
    1. Select Text Documents for the Show field.
    2. Select Text Data with Preview for the Open As field.
  3. Click Delimited.
  4. Note: The dialog to choose between Delimited and Fixed Width is not displayed in JMP 6 and higher. JMP makes a “best guess” as to the type. This can be changed in the Text Import Preview dialog if necessary.

  5. From the Text Import Preview dialog, select the appropriate options for importing the text file. To test the selected settings, click Apply Settings.
  6. Click OK when the column information appears correct.
