I didn’t know JMP could do that!

SAS Co-Founder and Executive Vice President John Sall will reveal some of his favorite more hidden features of JMP® software during Discovery Summit Europe in Copenhagen. As JMP gets even more sophisticated and its features are delivered more invisibly through keyboard modifiers, drag-and-drops, right-click menus and buried options, you may miss some of its useful features when you do what you’ve always done. If you can’t attend Discovery Summit in Copenhagen, you can see this list of things you may not know about JMP. Plus, there are additional features you’ll want to see in this bonus list of things you may not know about JMP.

How to overlay histograms in JMP

You can overlay histograms to review the similarities and/or differences between the distributions of two or more variables. Overlaying the histograms allows you to compare the distributions in a more precise manner than viewing them separately. To overlay histograms using the Distribution platform:

  1. Create your histograms: From the data table, click Analyze > Distribution. Place two numeric, continuous columns in the "Y, Columns" box and click "OK."

  2. Customize the colors of the elements in each plot so you can distinguish them in the final result (e.g., red for one variable and blue for the other). To do this, right click within a histogram and choose "Customize." In the item list, click "Histogram." Change Fill Color to red and Transparency to 0.5 (to more easily observe where the histograms overlap). Click "OK." Repeat, selecting a different Fill Color to customize the color of your other histogram.

  3. Overlay the histograms: First right click within a histogram and choose Edit > Copy Frame Contents. Next, right click within the other histogram and choose Edit > Paste Frame Contents. You may have to adjust the axis range in view to see both complete histograms. The result is both histograms in one graph.

You can now compare the distributions. And that's not all. You can include normal distribution curves in the overlay, or you can use Graph Builder to overlay your histograms. This post shows you how.

New Statistical Thinking Module Available

The Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) module is now available in our free Statistical Thinking course. EDA is an investigative process that uses summary statistics and graphical tools to help you get to know your data. The goal is to generate interesting questions or hypotheses that you can test using more formal statistical methods.

The module covers describing your data, problem solving using EDA, communicating with data, saving and sharing your results and preparing data for analysis.

Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving, the online statistics course, is available for free to anyone interested in building practical skills in using data to solve problems better.
