Common questions from IT staff about JMP Student Edition

Academic institutions that install JMP for use in classrooms and labs or to conduct exams should follow the instructions shared in the How do I deploy question below. We also recommend posting information on how to get JMP on your institution’s software website. Information about privacy, compliance, accessibility, security, and accepted use are included below as well.

How do I deploy JMP® Student Edition in classrooms and/or computer labs?

Please note that each JMP Student Edition user must have a registered MyJMP account before accessing the software in the lab. A MyJMP account is automatically set up in the JMP Student Edition download and installation process at jmp.com/student. It is recommended that students set up their account at least two days before software use is needed.

To deploy JMP Student Edition in computer labs:

1.      Obtain installation files.

The IT manager must download the JMP Student Edition installers for Windows and Macintosh. The creation of a free MyJMP profile is required. (Note: if you are unable to download JMP directly, IT staff may request installers by opening a JMP Tech Support ticket (support@jmp.com) with subject line: JMP SE installer access.

2.      Install software on lab computers.

  • Individual installation: The IT manager installs JMP Student Edition on each lab computer (Mac OS or Windows).
  • Image deployment: If using an image, the IT manager creates a base image with JMP Student Edition installed and deploys it to all lab computers.

3.      Confirm licenses and authorizations prior to the beginning of the course.

Ensure that all users have a current registration of a JMP Student Edition license and have the necessary authorization to use the software. To register, have each student complete the Get Started with JMP Student Edition registration steps. If a student’s previous registration of JMP Student Edition has expired, they must re-register using the Get Started with JMP Student Edition steps.

4.      Launch the software.

During the course, users must launch JMP Student Edition on their assigned lab PCs. For login, the software prompts for an authorized email address. Students enter the email address they used to register for JMP Student Edition, receive a verification code, and enter the code in JMP. The software will start running, and users can begin their work.

5.      Determine whether a post-course session uninstall is needed.

  • Uninstall or leave: The software can be uninstalled from the lab PCs or remain installed for future use.
  • Future usage: If left installed, future users will need to have an authorized email address to run the software.
  • Students can deauthorize JMP on these lab computers by clicking Help > Deauthorize. It will remove the student’s authorization in this computer only.

Reminder for home use: After obtaining authorization, students can install JMP Student Edition on their personal computers. Students can then use the software at home to complete assignments and projects. For more information, please see the Deploying JMP Student Edition guide.

What academic verification is needed to use the JMP Student Edition?

Each student, researcher, or faculty member at your institution is required to perform academic verification via Single Sign-On (SSO). Federation trust is enabled through three mainstays, contained within Identity Provider Operators (IdP), Service Provider Operators (SP), and the Federation Operator. In the United States, these cores are serviced by InCommon Federation. If your institution does not belong to a participating Federation, you may either join one or set up a connection directly with Proxi.id, our academic verification service partner.

Occasionally we hear from users who are not able to verify through our academic verification service partner, which is often the result of a client-side firewall or another network block. Please be sure to allow network access to Proxi.id to streamline verification.

JMP Student Edition license is an individual software license between JMP Statistical Discovery LLC and each student, researcher, or faculty member.

Can I use the software without an internet connection?
If exams or other activities need to be conducted in a classroom or lab without an internet connection, JMP can provide the specific and required domains needed for MyJMP login to use the software in these situations. To request this information, contact support@jmp.com with subject line: myjmp secure endpoints.
