Harnessing Analytics to Transform Manufacturing

Time:  10 a.m.

Presenter
Tom Lange, Technology Optimization & Management, LLC

Two stories are rarely told in the excitement surrounding generational innovations:

  1. Even small improvements to everyday life were powerful motivators for a particular invention.
  2. Behind the scenes, analytics were a necessary component for success.

Often, the motivations seem too “small,” i.e., not worthy of the innovation. And the analytics part of the story is often judged to be too dull or too hard to tell regular folks – so those important stories are rarely told. In this presentation, I tell a few of those stories, from the past up to the present. While all these stories were enabled by analytics, ultimately, they were simply dedicated to making everyday life just a little better. I then close with some organizational lessons learned that demonstrate how to increase the impact of analytics to help shape the most pressing enterprise-level decisions and do so with greater urgency.

About Tom Lange

For nearly four decades at Procter & Gamble, Tom Lange founded and led its organizational Modeling & Simulation (M&S) community. Before retiring as Director of R&D M&S in 2015, he spent his professional career modeling and simulating formulations, products, and production systems, helping make everyday life a little cleaner, a little tastier, a little easier.

Lange was an early SAS user in the 1980s and one of the first JMP 1.0 users at P&G. His analysis contributed to projects on how hot air roasts peanuts and coffee, how chocolate chip cookies bake, and how the size of a baby affects the probability that a diaper will leak.

Currently, he spends his professional time consulting with public and private enterprises to improve their competitive edge through the use of the latest computing-based modeling and simulation tools. He still uses JMP and JSL with his clients.
