Understanding and Analyzing Information Using Graph Builder

Graph Builder's 'sketch pad' includes drop zones, buttons on the top left that change according to the variables and type of graph you create, a list of your columns (variable names) on the left, and icons at the top for the types of graphical display and analysis you can choose. Like all JMP platforms, Graph Builder is context-sensitive and the red triangle options let you customize appearance and analysis. So, as you start dragging and dropping variables, the options change.  For example, after you start the graph, the available icons for suitable graphs (like bar charts) will be active; the others will be greyed out.

Please note: Download the JMP .jrn and .jmp files to the same directory to try the techniques your self.  Expand the Journal options to see short written instructions, also.

See how to:

  • Example One (Airline Delay Data - Determine number of flight options per airline and which airline would have least chance of delay during the week and around holidays)
    • Get a calendar view of busiest days to travel during the year
    • Change color scheme of legend by right-clicking
    • Populate legends by adding additional overlay options
    • Create a Local Data Filter
  • Example Two (View Crime rates by type and by date)

Main components of Graph Builder

  • Column Box: right click to perform operations on columns.
  • Axes: Right click for short menu, double click for more elaborate menu with customization options move.
  • Legend: Right click for short menu, double click for more customization options.
  • Spec Limits: Right-click on column name in data table, then choose Column Info>Column Properties drop down. Check the "Show as graph reference line" for spec limits to appear in visualizations.
  • Value Colors: Right-click on column name in data table, then choose Column Info>Column Properties.
  • Formula: Right-click on column name in data table, then choose Formula.
  • Red Triangle Menu
    • Local Data Filter: Found at the bottom of red triangle menu, allows you to filter data by columns.
    • Column Switcher: Under the red triangle menu, choose Redo>Column Switcher. Allows you to between multiple columns within one graph.

Questions from the session answered by Christian Stopp @christianstopp and Maanasa Thyagarajan @MaanasaT .

Q: How do I use the Recall Button?

A:  Recall can be launched Graph Builder as well as other Graphs.  Depending on the state of your graph in Graph Builder, you may have to click the DIALOG button on the left of the to see Recall, Red, etc.  The sequence from a completed (DONE) graph may be Show the Control Panel, Start Over, then see and activate the Recall button.

Q: Is there a quick way to see selected rows in a data table without scrolling through table?

A: Yes. Select data points from a graph and then go to Table bottom Rows panel.  Click on the word Selected (you will see the numbe of rows listed to the right of the word Selected). R-click and choose Data View, and a table of the selected data rows will display.

Q: Can I run All-Pairs, Tukey in Graph Builder?

A: You'll need to use the Fit Y by X platform as you dive deeper into analysis.  Graph Builder is primarily for visualization, with a touch of stats stuff.

Q: Can you add X-axis reference lines?

A: Yes, because JMP Is context sensitive, you can usually right click over and area to find display options. For example, here for X-Axis (or Y-Axis)  right click the axis and  choose Axis Settings.

Q: How did the months order correctly vs alphabetically?  Is it categorized as "months" and not simply words?

A: JMP has some default rules for such cases if it can recognize the pattern provided. For text generally, the Value Order option of the Column Properties allows this too. You can right click on any axis, choose Value Order, and create a custom order.
