Unearth the possibilities in your data
Exploring Best Practices in Statistical Modelling
13 October 2015 | Live Stream
09:30 – 13:00 BST
Applied statistics expert Dick De Veaux uses his expertise in modelling and graphical analysis techniques to tell an interesting and relatable story about the effect of age on sports performance.
His case study, based on an ongoing data analysis project, uses two big data sets. The first includes 174,000 times from US Masters Swimming events over the past 40 years. The second includes 28,000 times from the Dipsea Race – an eight-mile trail run in northern California that uses a unique system for giving a head start to runners based on age and gender, making winners of men and women of all ages.
De Veaux explores various aspects of multiple effects, builds an appropriate and useful model, and teases the age effect out from all the rest. He will take audience questions at the end of his presentation.
You’ll learn about:
- Preparing data.
- Using various types of models.
- Averaging models.
- Knowing when to use a bootstrap forest.
- Assessing model uncertainty.
