Presenter: Oliver Pickburn, Innovation Excellence Manager, Synthomer

Oliver Pickburn has worked in the chemical industry for nearly 15 years. He began his career in the coatings industry as a formulator before moving into various Innovation management roles within the specialty chemicals industry. Throughout his career, he has been a practitioner and avid supporter of the use of Design of Experiments (DOE) in an innovation setting. He has experienced multiple instances of DOE bringing significant value to projects in terms of combining insight and solution generation with a resource efficient experimental program.

About the content:

When it comes to solving problems in industrial R&D and manufacturing, structured experimentation is often necessary to gain fundamental knowledge of our systems, processes, or products. Traditional ways of experimenting often result in unpredictable timescales and outcomes. While we may find a solution to our problem, we are rarely confident it is the best, cheapest, or most robust. We may be unable to demonstrate why we think it is the best solution and have limited transferable knowledge or insight as to how we might make changes in the future without impacting outcomes.

Perhaps you are developing methods to measure product or process attributes, optimising the process for making new products or formulations, or working on improving existing ones?  Whatever challenge you’re facing, you will learn:

  • Why Design of Experiments (DOE) is the fastest path to a solution;
  • How to get going with DOE;
  • Where to acquire DOE know-how during your adoption journey;
  • What to do to encourage others to follow.
