Albert Einstein once remarked, “If I had an hour to solve a problem, I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and five minutes thinking about solutions.” This underscores the critical importance of implementing the Define phase in problem solving before rushing into solutions.
In the Define phase, engineers and researchers must thoroughly identify the problem or the opportunity for improvement. They can do this by setting clear project goals and understanding customer requirements – both internal and external.
By assessing process performance and quantifying the ability of the process to meet specifications, teams can craft a well-defined project charter. This charter clarifies the focus, scope, direction, and motivation for the improvement team and is essential for securing stakeholder approval for resource allocation and budgeting. In this context, the Measure phase becomes crucial, enabling the Define phase to be effective.
Together, the Define and Measure phases are foundational to setting a Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound (SMART) Six Sigma project goal. These phases ensure that the objectives are clear, feasible, and aligned with broader organizational priorities.
In this webinar, we explore the JMP Modern Six Sigma add-in and JMP Project for a comprehensive Six Sigma project.
