This case study will examine the challenges faced by a company wanting to bring to market a new product that was proving difficult to scale to production volumes. The company had a large number of inputs that might affect yield, production rate and by-products and therefore could not see a way forward to commercialisation. We will show how they were able to define an efficient experimentation plan that delivered the insight needed to successfully scale-up to production capacity. The findings were at odds with simple kinetic theory which also led to a better understanding of the reaction mechanism. This finding also resulted in a change to the screening strategy for product discovery. Not only did the project help commercialise a new product faster, it also improved the discovery rate of future products, thereby accelerating innovation.
