Select Method

Use the drop-down option to select a method to calculate a subset of features that exhibit high cell-to-cell variation in the data set.

It has been reported that focusing on genes that exhibit high cell-to-cell variation in downstream analysis helps to highlight biological signal in single-cell data sets.

Two methods, Dispersion and VST, are included in this workflow. The Dispersion method is based on the mean.var. plot in the Seurat package. VST is based on a Loess fitting method which is also described in Seurat.

Note: The default number of variable genes for the VST method has been set to 2000.
