Grouping Variables

The Overlay Plot platform allows the production of several plots in one window through the use of grouping variables. With one grouping variable, a stacked vector of plots appears, with one plot for each level of the grouping variable. Two grouping variables result in a matrix of plots.

1.

Select Help > Sample Data Library and open Students.jmp.

2.

From the Graph menu, select Overlay Plot.

3.

Assign weight as the Y variable and height as the X variable.

4.

Assign age and sex as grouping variables.

5.

A portion of the resulting plot is shown in Grouped Plots Without Separate Axes.

Select the Separate Axes option from the red triangle menu to produce plots that do not share axes. Compare Grouped Plots Without Separate Axes to Grouping Variables.
