Create New Data Tables
To create a new data table by entering data manually
1.
Select File > New > Data Table. This shows an empty data table with no rows and one numeric column, labeled Column 1.

Move the cursor onto a cell.
3.
Click in the cell. The cursor appears as a line in the cell, as shown in A New Data Table.

Enter a value.
There are several ways to fill a table with values:
•
Create new rows and columns and type or paste data into the data grid. (See Add Rows in Enter and Edit Data.)
•
Construct a formula to calculate column values. (See Create a Formula in Formula Editor.)
•
Import data from another application. (See About Importing Data to JMP.)
•
Copy values from another application and paste them into the table.
•
Use a measuring instrument to read external measures. See the Scripting Guide for details about data feeds.
•
Drag columns from one table to another.

Pasting Dates from Another Application
When you paste dates such as “10/11/2012” into a data table, JMP might need to resolve the ambiguity between m/d/y and d/m/y formats. Is “10/11/2012” in October or November? If you assign a date format to the column, there is no ambiguity. Otherwise, JMP guesses m/d/y unless the first pasted value can only be a d/m/y date. For example, “13/11/2012” is not a valid m/d/y date.
In some cases, JMP chooses a character format for the column. You can change the character column to a numeric data column later. Values that do not match the format you choose are set to missing.
JMP assigns the m/d/y format if the first date in a column is not a day bigger than 12. You can assign the proper date format to the column before you begin to resolve the ambiguity. For more information about how JMP assigns the date format, see Two-digit year rule.
To convert the a column to a numeric column with the d/m/y format, follow these steps:
1.
Right-click the column and select Column Info.
2.
Select the Numeric data type.
3.
Select the Continuous modeling type, and then select the Date > d/m/y format.
If the date format you select is not valid for one date in the column, that date is converted to a missing value.
